The Intrusion Prevention portfolio provides enterprise class intrusion detection and prevention (IDS/IPS), protecting networks against hackers, vulnerabilities, worms and viruses. This portfolio is made up of the Threat Protection System (TPS) which incorporates key technology from Sourcefire. As a recognized world leader in real-time threat defense solutions, Sourcefire technology utilizes Snort, the open source intrusion detection engine.

As part of the Nortel Layered Defense architecture, the Threat Protection System automatically blocks attacks using the  Switched Firewall ,  Application Switch ,  Secure Network Access Switch ,  Secure Router  and  VPN Gateway  as enforcement points in the network, thus providing total threat protection.

• Threat Protection System Defense Center
  The Defense Center provides central management for the Intrusion and Real-Time Threat Intelligence sensors. Network Administrators use the Defense Center for sensor configuration, distributing new signatures, reporting, threat analysis and prioritization.
• Threat Protection System Intrusion Sensor
  The Threat Protection System Intrusion Sensors use Snort based intrusion detection to assist network and security managers in identifying existing and emerging threats. By leveraging the Snort open source community TPS users can benefit from the largest rule-base in the industry.
• Threat Protection System Threat Intelligence Sensor
  The Threat Protection System Threat Intelligence Sensor uses Real-Time Network Awareness (RNA) passive technology to identify and profile assets on the network. Unlike traditional active-scanning tools, the Threat Intelligence Sensor provides real-time asset profiling including operating-system, services and applications. The Defense Center is able to correlate information from the Threat Intelligence and Intrusion Sensors and determine if new threats will impact the network.
