Tell me about yourself and your experience at Nortel?
I am a Test Engineer and I work in the Universal Mobile Telephony System (UMTS) organization. The work I do ensures that the software on the Mobile Telephony switch is robust and can handle heavy call volume simulating real-world conditions.
What are your career aspirations?
I want to eventually be in a role that encourages significant people interaction, a well-balanced mix of technology and people management, in a Product Line management type position.
How did you end up working at Nortel?
I was notified from Nortel during a period of downsizing, and worked for another company for a short period of time.
When I started looking again, Nortel was the only corporation that I even considered working for, my other preference was a community college where I had an offer for an Associate Professor position.
Having said that - I passed my resume through my friends as part of the Alumni program and landed in my current job quite rapidly.
How would you describe the working environment at Nortel?
Very flexible is the first thing that comes to mind. Being a working mother, that issue is most important. The management here encourages telecommuting and a flexible work schedule. Emphasis is totally on whether the work is accomplished rather then where it is done.
I guess this sort of environment also promotes a sense of camaraderie and I find employees much more friendly and helpful in this company than in the other ones I have previously worked for. I also truly appreciate that Nortel has best-in-class processes across the organization which allow me to work efficiently and have a sense of direction.
These are just a few factors that make Nortel a very desirable choice for individuals who are keen on maintaining a healthy family/work life balance.
What values are important to succeed at Nortel?
A focus on Quality and on Customer - they are both inter-related; You need to provide Quality to the Customer and they are the driving force behind the company. No Customer/No Company. In today's world the other important thing is Accountability. The company is accountable to its share holders, the people in the company are accountable to the customers and the management should be accountable to the people they manage. Adherence to these three core values is most important to succeed at Nortel!
