Melanie
Integration and Acceptance Engineer > France
Tell me about yourself and your experience at Nortel?
I joined Nortel in France a year ago, as a GPRS/UMTS Packet Core Engineer, to be part of the EMEA Integration and Acceptance team. For this past first year, I've had the opportunity to work on a couple of projects, in different countries, on various Nortel equipments, with Nortel colleagues from all over the world. What I really appreciate about my experience at Nortel is of course that I could do so many different things in such a short period of time, which made me learn a lot about my new company and its products, but also that I had good training before really getting involved in projects.
How did you end up working at Nortel? Why did you choose Nortel?
Before Nortel, I spent a year and a half at a consulting company, working on IP networking. This was really interesting, but not enough for me: I really wanted to know more about wireless networking. I could have participated in some wireless projects as a consultant, but I really wanted to get involved in the long-term activities of my company. Among my criteria was also the international environment of the projects I would be working on. That is why I decided to apply for a job at Nortel.
What type of technology or projects are you working on?
I am working on GPRS/UMTS Packet Core projects. As a member of the Integration and Acceptance team, I am involved in setting up and testing equipments on the customers' networks, all over Europe.
What is most inspiring in your job?
What is great in my job is that I have direct contact with the customers, which is not the case for a lot of other technical jobs. So it is an additional motivation. I really want them to be satisfied with Nortel products and work. Moreover, I can see the concrete results of our installation, as we are working on live networks directly, testing it from the customer and subscriber point of views.
Being on site working in a live environment, I also discover the way Nortel products is interacting with other equipment, and the related problems we have to deal with, which completes my understanding of a GPRS/UMTS in-service network.
Describe your relationship with management.
As I am most of the time out of the office, I do not have the opportunity to see my manager very often. But we contact each other regularly either by email or by phone, so that he knows what's happening on site, and so that I can make any remark on either my job or administrative questions. We meet several times a year to define my priorities for the next couple of months and see what has been achieved during the past months.
What is it like to work for a global company? Have you had the opportunity to travel, work, or live in other cities or countries?
All the projects I have been working on were abroad. So I spent most of my time in different countries (UK, Ireland, Germany), and only a few weeks of preparation in France. I think it is great to have such opportunities; I really enjoy working in global teams, with people from different countries that have different ways of working and thinking. My Nortel colleagues are often from other countries too.
What would you say to someone who is considering joining Nortel?
If you are interested in working in a global environment and in learning a lot about fast evolving new technologies, just go for it!
