Tell me about yourself and your experience at Nortel?
I have an engineering background and enjoy figuring out "How things work".

My experience at Nortel has been wonderful. The flexibility while working with Nortel has been wonderful and allowed me to have a good work-life and personal-life balance. The thing I most admire about us (Nortelites) is our integrity. It's in our DNA to "Do the right thing". And because of this, we'll always be a great company.

What type of technology or projects are you working on?
As the India R&D prime, I'm leverage Nortel's brand and presence in India to research and develop products in a cost-effective manner by working closely with Nortel's Indian partners and also by creating tie-ups with local Universities.

How would you describe the working environment at Nortel?
The work environment is very loose. No rigid structures in place. Usually, the employees are empowered to be motivated and to be productive. Nortel is very supportive of life outside work as seen from the "Work from Home" and "Flexible Hours" initiatives.

Most Nortel managers quickly become friends, and thus solving problems becomes a collaborative effort as opposed to authoritative, which also creates a general feeling of belonging.

What values are important to succeed at Nortel?
  • Integrity
  • Determination
  • Thinking beyond current roles & responsibilities and taking action

Nortel doesn't award new roles to individuals. Individuals have to work in the new role (as a self initiative) and based on taking on "new" responsibilities, the individual is recognized and awarded the role.

What is it like to work for a global company?
I've only lived and worked in US & India but I've had the opportunity to work with Americans, Canadians, English, South Africans, French, Irish, Germans, Brazilians, Indians, Chinese, Egyptians, Thai, Pakistanis, Japanese, Vietnamese, and probably a host of other nationals as part of working at Nortel. This is a unique experience, one that can't be "learnt".

What would you say to someone who is considering joining Nortel?
It's a blast, especially now. Exciting challenges! Tremendous opportunities! The world is changing and Nortel is shaping it. To the person considering joining, I would ask "Are you ready to transform the world?"
