Tell me about yourself and your experience at Nortel?
I am the interface between the Nortel business units and the IS Organisation. Prime responsibilities include ensuring a high level of service delivery, working with the business units in demonstrating Nortel products and maintaining a cost efficient environment whilst utilizing leading edge technology. I am also the IS project manager responsible for all IT related activities in the building and fitout (outfitting) of the new Nortel Sydney office building. In amongst these I also am involved with management of any IS related issues that may occur within the sites.
What are your career aspirations?
To develop other aspects of myself and transition into new business areas and opportunities. I am excited about where in Nortel I may be working next.
What type of technology are you working on?
As a technology leader, Nortel needs to continually promote and demonstrate the latest technology. As an example we work in an environment rich with technologies such as, Voice over IP (VoIP), Wireless Networks, Multi-media communications, Automatic Call Distribution, Voice messaging and Optical Networks. The most exciting part is the convergence of these technologies on a global scale.
Do you feel management is accessible?
Absolutely. I am always encouraged to speak directly with those people that are involved with my work and also have a very honest relationship with my immediate manager. Nortel promotes straight talk. I am also comfortable to contact my managers' manager or any other manager as the need arises. Nortel has the most down to earth management team I have worked with in my 20-year career.
How do you compare Nortel to other companies or former employer (s?)
I have found Nortel to be a company that promotes and supports a fantastic working environment and culture. The company has always provided the right tools for me to be able to achieve my work objectives. The communication of key corporate messages is done in an efficient manner and delivered using latest technology. Nortel also reinvests a lot of earnings back into R&D, which allows it to remain exciting. I would also say that Nortel has empowered me to be able to perform my role within the guidelines.
As an employee, how is it like to work at Nortel.
Fantastic. Every day is a different day when you are working in a global environment that is constantly changing to meet the world's demands for new technology. The fact that we are given flexibility to be able to work remotely, provided with all the latest tools and devices and encouraged to divest our knowledge is appreciated. It is easy to want to complete any challenges as you feel a part of something and feel like a person who is contributing. This is evident in the many reward and recognition programs available.
What it is like to work in a global company? Have you had the opportunity to travel, work, or live in other cities or countries?
I was fortunate to have worked in a global team in my first few years with Nortel. This role provided me with travel opportunities and the ability to work in a virtual team with others around the world. Being able to work with people located in all areas of the world is a great experience. It provides a true multi-cultural environment and a learning ground that provides "worldly wisdom".
