Can I apply for a position outside my home country?
Yes, you can apply to any job opportunity advertised on the Nortel career website. Your eligibility for employment in another country is dependant on a number of factors including, in many instances, upon legal eligibility to work in a certain country.
What are the qualities Nortel looks for in a candidate?
We are interested in people who are passionate about innovation and creation of new technologies. In addition to relevant skills, education and experiences, candidates must be good team players, demonstrate initiative and have strong personal drive. For more senior positions, proven leadership and the ability to inspire others is essential. Refer to job postings for specific details on skills requirements.

Application & interview process
How can I apply for a job opportunity on the Nortel career website?
To apply for a specific opportunity you can simply click "Apply On-Line" at the bottom of the job posting. You will be prompted to log into your Nortel account or create a new account if you do not already have one. Once you log in you can select one of your existing resumes or create a new one to apply to the position in question.
Can I submit a speculative application?
Yes, you can submit your resume to Nortel at any time. Simply use the "Submit Resume/CV" links located around the site (Note: There are specific profile builders for Nortel alumni, students, and experienced candidates. If you are unsure whether you are in the right builder, navigate to the careers home page and select the Submit Resume/CV link on left hand navigation).
What is the selection process?
Nortel recruiters and/or hiring managers will review resumes submitted for posted opportunities based on the qualifying criteria established for the position. The best qualified candidates will be contacted for interviews. Recruiters and hiring managers may also search the Nortel resume database for qualified candidates (see previous question).
Joining Nortel
Will I get some training to help me get up-to-speed?
When you join the team, you may require training. The training will vary depending on the role. It may include internal or external courses, on-the-job training via mentoring or other suitable and available means.
What career development prospects do employees have at Nortel?
Career development is important to Nortel and is promoted via regular discussions with your managers. Career development can take several forms:
- Development of specialist skills
- Shift of technology focus to broaden scope/experience
- Increase in responsibility
- Internal move to take on new responsibilities

Can I move internally?
Internal mobility is important to Nortel. Employees have access to internal opportunities across all sites and can apply to positions suitable to their competencies via our on-line job posting tool.
Student and New Grad Program
For what types of positions does Nortel recruit?
Nortel recruits students and graduates to work in a number of its businesses and functions, including R&D, customer support, HR, finance, network engineering and technical sales support. A majority of positions require a technical background.
Do you have programs for New Graduates?
All the graduates that join Nortel receive training that the company determines is required. Depending on the assignment, the structure of the programs vary from a full rotational program to a list of internal or external training courses, on-the-job training, mentoring, etc.
Is there a closing date for applications?
In general, we continue taking applications until all vacancies have been filled. However, some student positions (i.e. co-op positions) may have application deadlines based on individual university's timelines. These deadlines will be published with the postings. Please note that anyone may submit a speculative resume/cv to Nortel at anytime via this website.
How long after I leave university can I apply for New Graduate vacancies?
You may apply for New Grad opportunities at Nortel for up to 18 months after you complete your degree.
How do I enter a co-op or internship program?
Nortel is a strong supporter of these programs and often hires co-op or internship students. Check with your university's co-op office or career services center to inquire about the availability of such programs at your school.
Do I have to be registered in a co-op, internship, or stagiaire program to work for Nortel as a student?
No, in addition to hiring students from these types of programs Nortel may also hire students who are not registered in any sort of work placement program. Students may be hired for temporary jobs in between academic terms or for part time employment during the school year.
Alumni Program
What is the goal of the Alumni program?
To enable eligible former Nortel employees to keep in touch and indicate willingness to be contacted about future, potential job opportunities.
What is the definition of an Alumnus?
An Alumnus is anyone who has worked at Nortel in the past in a regular full time, regular part time or temporary full time position and has been on the corporation's payroll (this includes students). Contractors and consultants are expressly excluded. Former Nortel employees who were within the scope of a divestiture (sale of business) may not be eligible, depending on the terms and conditions of the sale of business agreement.

Are Alumni considered for internal or external positions?
Alumni would be considered external candidates. There is no guarantee that Alumni who register will be recruited for any job opportunity.
