Nortel Networks Introduces Scalable, Secure Routing for Large Enterprises, CarriersContivity Enhancements Enable Large-Scale Deployments of VPNs, Secure Remote Access SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Nortel Networks* [NYSE/TSX: NT] introduced new products and enhancements to security platforms designed to enable large enterprises and carriers that offer managed services unprecedented flexibility to provide secure network connectivity. This will enable them to link branch offices, offsite workers, customers, partners and suppliers. This solution is designed to ease the deployment of very large site-to-site and remote access Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). This is the third phase of Nortel Networks Secure Routing Technology (SRT) on Contivity* rollout, which enables secure mix-and-match IP services to be deployed when and where they are needed, whether the deployment is for branch office connectivity or to provide remote access for traveling or work-at-home employees. Companies are continuing to expand their VPN focus from secure remote access to site-to-site networks. At the same time, the scope of these VPN deployments is generally larger than in the past, introducing a number of technical challenges around performance, scalability and security. Phase III of Secure Routing Technology on Contivity addresses these challenges of large site deployments, and provides flexibility and greater options for large companies that need to secure their converged infrastructure through the introduction of Nortel Networks Contivity 5000, Contivity software release 4.8, Contivity Configuration Manager 2.0, and Remote Access Manager. In addition to deployment flexibility, implementation of SRT on Contivity offers the potential for enterprises to save up to 40 percent of their total cost of infrastructure ownership, according to Nortel Networks studies. With this latest phase of the initiative, the scalability issue that hamper large deployments have been addressed, resulting in product enhancements that provide secure access for tens of thousands of remote users without performance degradation. “By addressing the scalability issue for very large-scale VPN deployments, we are eliminating one of the biggest security impediments for our largest enterprise customers,” said Malcolm Collins, president, Enterprise Networks, Nortel Networks. “In addition to providing greater control over the security aspects of the communications infrastructure, we offer companies choice and flexibility, providing them the secure components they require to build out a secure infrastructure customized to their unique requirements. At the same time, our products are designed with security up-front, which has enabled Nortel Networks to address this key need in the market.” “Contivity’s comprehensive security capabilities meet our FBI, Homeland Security, and Massachusetts security initiatives,” said Robert Mulvanity, director of Networks and Operations for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Executive Office of Public Safety, Criminal History Systems Board. “Contivity allows us to deploy a single device at the branch that provides secure VPN routing and Wide Area Network services, offering the Police Departments the flexibility to interact securely with other entities such as record management vendors.” “The Contivity solution provides us with a superior, phased, turnkey solution that is both efficient and easily monitored, and is more cost effective than having to retrofit our installed based legacy routers, which even then would have only addressed limited aspects of our total network requirement,” Mulvanity said. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Executive Office of Public Safety, Criminal History Systems Board has deployed existing Contivity products. SRT on Contivity is designed to provide customers with a robust, high performance, highly-scalable IP infrastructure based on the principles of Nortel Networks ‘Security in the DNA.’ SRT enables service delivery over encrypted tunnels using dynamic routing protocols, mix-and-match VPN, routing and stateful firewall services, as well as integration of Contivity policy, security and management across all IP services. One major component of SRT Phase III is Contivity 5000, a new product designed to provide 400 Mbps of encrypted data throughput to accommodate very large site VPN deployments. It comes with 5,000 VPN tunnels, as well as routing, firewalling, bandwidth management and quality of service capabilities. Contivity 5000 will be available in May 2003. “Solution providers are seeing attractive growth opportunities in supporting the development of secure communications infrastructures for their accounts,” said Roy Appelbaum, vice president of product marketing, networking, Tech Data. “Our reseller customers can realize easier deployments and achieve a higher level of client satisfaction when incorporating Nortel Networks scalable line of VPN solutions.” Another addition to the Secure Routing Technology on Contivity portfolio is Remote Access Manager, which enables companies to handle remote access conveniently and cost-effectively for very large user populations on a global basis. Remote Access Manager enables tens of thousands of dial-up users to access the corporate infrastructure via the closest, lowest cost or best-performing ISP access point. This also allows companies to form the most advantageous relationships with service providers to offer the most cost-effective and/or best throughput, depending on the needs of each customer. Remote Access Manager will be available in July 2003. Rounding out the new SRT on Contivity capabilities is Contivity software release 4.8, which includes a feature to ensure that remote users do not inadvertently open security holes in the network. This feature, called Tunnel Guard, checks that remote users employ virus protection and personal firewalls in accordance with a company’s security posture, for example, before allowing remote access to the network. At the same time, the Firewall User Authentication feature allows discrete areas or services of the VPN to be cordoned off with password protection. Contivity software release 4.8 will also be available in July 2003. SRT on Contivity is a cornerstone of Nortel Networks ‘One Network. A world of choice.’ enterprise vision. It is focused on providing a single, secure framework for delivering mission-critical applications and services to users regardless of where they are and how they access the enterprise network. By extending the security architecture across disparate networks, users will now be able to maintain a secure, common communication experience at anytime, whether they are working from their desk or accessing the network from a pocket computer at a customer site, for example.
