Nortel Networks, TELCEL Deploy Metropolitan Ring in Mexico CityNew ATM-based Network Expected to Integrate Services, Increase Capacity, Lower Costs MEXICO CITY – Nortel Networks [NYSE/TSX: NT] has completed deployment of a metropolitan ring connecting the central switching stations in Mexico City and surrounding areas for TELCEL, Latin America’s largest wireless operator and leader in Mexico. The new infrastructure connects the strategic nodes of the network, positioning TELCEL to significantly increase voice capacity and reduce its operational costs. Nortel Networks deployed Nortel Networks Passport* 7000 and Passport 15000 Multiservice Switches and Passport Packet Voice Gateway (PVG) solutions. This positioned TELCEL to reduce the number of trunks and evolve the network to a reliable and highly scaleable ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) infrastructure. The network is now in service. “TELCEL strives to provide its customers with the most advanced wireless services available on the market,” said Jorge Gonzalez y Gonzalez, director of engineering, TELCEL. “By leveraging Nortel Networks leading-edge solutions and extensive experience, we can continue to address the growing voice and data needs of our customers.” “Nortel Networks provides next generation solutions to its customers in Latin America and around the world, positioning them to develop their networks while reducing costs,” said Victor Cervantes, managing director, Nortel Networks Mexico. “This deployment will not only help TELCEL with a more cost-effective infrastructure, but it is also key in the evolution to new wireless services.” Passport 15000 and 7000 are key components of Nortel Networks industry-leading portfolio of multiservice switches, which also includes Passport 20000. Nortel Networks was the global market share leader in multiservice WAN equipment for the last seven quarters as of year-end 2002, according to Synergy Research Group. With more than 40,000 systems deployed in over 1,500 customer networks globally, Passport has proven field experience in delivering in-service reliability. TELCEL is the leading operator of wireless communications in Mexico, with 20 million subscribers as of December 2002 and the only one with nationwide coverage, as it serves the country’s 9 regions. The company offers the most advanced wireless developments in the market, combining in two networks the most proven and highest quality technologies in the world: TDMA and GSM. TELCEL heads the operations and international investments of América Movil [NYSE: AMX] [NASDAQ: AMOV] [BMV: AMX], one of the most solidly expanding telecom groups in the region, with operations in the main markets of the American continent and more than 32 million wireless subscribers.
