Nortel Networks Deploying Voice, Data Network for Qwest Using Internet Technology

Qwest First Local Carrier to Serve Customers Using Voice Over Packet Network Architecture

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. – Nortel Networks* [NYSE/TSE: NT] is deploying for Qwest Communications International, Inc. a new, packet-based network infrastructure that Qwest intends to use to replace traditional, circuit-switched networks throughout its 14-state region.

Featuring Nortel Networks carrier-class softswitch, this network is already carrying live traffic in Boise, Idaho, making Qwest the first ILEC (incumbent local exchange carrier) to serve customers using a voice over packet network architecture. This represents a critical milestone in Qwest’s drive to bring Voice over IP (VoIP) service to all of its customers.

“Qwest takes a cutting-edge approach to technology, one that has propelled it to a leadership position in the broadband Internet communications industry,” said Frank Plastina, president, Metro Networks, Nortel Networks. “Nortel Networks packet technology and softswitch portfolio support Qwest’s strategy, and realize our vision to transform the public phone network from circuit to packet.”

“Qwest is planning to expand its packet-switched deployments into other major metro areas within its 14-state territory,” said Augie Cruciotti, executive vice president, Local Networks, Qwest Communications. “Being the first ILEC to transition from circuit-switched to packet-switched networks emphasizes Qwest’s leadership position in bringing new services to customers. Qwest’s strategy is to use broadband technology to integrate Internet, voice and data applications and deliver converged, collaborative services. Our work with Nortel Networks is helping advance that strategy.”

Nortel Networks is supplying Qwest with products from the Nortel Networks voice over packet portfolio, including the carrier-grade softswitch, Succession* Communication Server 2000, and trunking gateways. Exemplifying leadership in the Carrier VoIP market, Nortel Networks has shipped in excess of one million voice over packet ports.
