Nortel in the Community

Nortel encourages and engages the use of the Internet as a fast moving tool to solve community challenges, including educating our children and supporting schools and teachers with technology training and resources.

Investing in Research and Education in Canada

Building on its long-standing tradition of investing in academic research, Nortel collaborates with over 25 leading universities and research consortia in Canada, the US, EMEA and CALA. Nortel has partnered with numerous Canadian universities to create unique research, recruiting and sponsorship programs. Joint projects and initiatives are currently underway with the University of Toronto, the University of Waterloo, the University of Ottawa, Carleton University, Queen's University and McGill University, to name just a few.

Throughout the year, Nortel offers students the opportunity to gain concrete workplace training through internship and co-op placements, and Nortel is a key employer of a large number of new graduates each year. At the elementary and secondary levels, Nortel programs are geared toward increasing awareness and interest of young people in science and technology. Across Canada, high school students can gain valuable work experience at Nortel through co-op and job-shadowing opportunities.

Nortel Learn IT

Nortel Learn IT*, our signature corporate community relations program, delivers technology training content to schools. Powered by a Nortel high bandwidth optical solution, Nortel Learn IT is a teaching tool which demonstrates the power of broadband through entertaining and instructional videos for teachers and students, in a true e-learning environment. Cable companies in North America can benefit directly from this program as incremental, proactive value to their broadband access services.

Employee-led Programs

Each year, Nortel employees across Canada donate thousands of hours of personal time and resources to supporting a wide range of non-profit and volunteer organizations. Regional teams work with selected local groups to host fundraising events and develop programs that address math, science and technology, education, healthcare and human services issues.

Nortel is a key supporter of the United Way through a variety of fundraising events, raffles, silent auctions and draws held throughout the year. Employee contributions are encouraged and facilitated via an on-line donation tool and automatic payroll deductions. Nortel employees are also proud supporters of the following organizations:
