Nortel established its first Australian office in Sydney in 1986 and New Zealand in 1987. Carrier Networks

Nortel delivers advanced networking technologies to Australia and New Zealand's leading carriers, building the regions next generation telecommunications infrastructure. Local carrier customers comprise of:
  • Telstra, Nortel wireless and wireline technology playing a key role in many aspects of Telstra's operations including:
    • Nortel CDMA2000 1xEV-DO solution enabling new broadband mobile services, building on the Nortel national CDMA network deployed in 2000.
    • Nortel GPRS solution providing packet data capabilities to Telstra GSM users.
    • Nortel Centrex IP solution providing the core of Telstra's CustomNet® IP business communication service.
    • Nortel Multiservice Switch platform to support a broad range of Telstra data transport requirements and services.
  • Optus, Nortel has been closely involved with Optus since its establishment as Australia's second carrier in 1992, including:
    • Wide deployment of Nortel switching technology across Optus' long distance, international and mobile telephony networks.
    • A five-year supply and services contract awarded in 2002 to build a Brisbane-Perth 10G DWDM backbone, complete national rollout of Optus' optical DWDM network, and enable Optus to extend DWDM access in Australia's metropolitan areas.
    • An upgrade to enable Optus' Nortel DMS switches for packet voice, enabling the new Optus IP Centrex service.
  • TelstraClear operating Nortel optical and voice switching for nationwide backbone networks; access networks for Wellington and Christchurch.
  • TelstraSaturn utilising a Nortel CRM (customer relationship management) solution to drive TelstraSaturn's broadband-based e-business strategy.
  • Vodafone New Zealand having deployed a Nortel packet backbone network connecting Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington for secure delivery of wireless services to over one million subscribers. As well as a Nortel Intelligent Packet Core the system that controls and bills Vodafone data services for both the 2G and 3G networks.
  • Southern Cross deployed a Nortel ultra long haul 10G optical network for provisioning of bandwidth services in New Zealand, Australia, Fiji, Hawaii and the mainland United States.
Enterprise Networks

Nortel Australia and New Zealand's enterprise customers comprise companies of all descriptions and sizes, from small and medium-sized businesses to Australia and New Zealand's largest corporations and multinationals, as well as state and federal governments.

Numbering well into the thousands, Nortel's enterprise customers span consultancies, defence, education, financial services, hospitality, healthcare, mining, railways, real estate, utilities and a wide range of other industries and market segments. At present, to meet the needs of today's enterprise customers, Nortel is focused on the delivery of converged voice and data networks, IP telephony, multimedia contact centres, wireless LAN and Wireless Mesh Networks, and security-based, data-protection solutions such as business continuity, disaster recovery and storage area networking.
