As CTO, Roese is responsible for leading the company's overall R&D strategy and execution and for directing future research across all product portfolios. He also works closely with the Chief Strategy Officer on emerging technologies, market opportunities and strategic partnerships. Roese is the functional leader of Nortel's 12,000 scientists, engineers and designers worldwide.

Prior to joining Nortel, Roese was vice president and CTO for networking technologies at semiconductor company Broadcom Corporation, where he was responsible for the long-term architecture and technical strategy for networking technologies. These technologies included optical, Power over Ethernet (PoE), switching, routing, security, broadband processors, fabrics and software elements.

Before joining Broadcom, Roese served as CTO at Enterasys Networks, which specializes in network security for enterprises. At Enterasys, Roese oversaw the development of the company's technology architectures, including comprehensive Quality of Service, security, management and transport services. Additionally, he was responsible for the company's initiatives in the Internet2/NGI effort and headed the worldwide marketing and IT organizations. Previous to Enterasys, Roese was the CTO of Cabletron Systems, where he was one of the key architects of Cabletron's SecureFast Switching.

Roese hosts his own blog on Nortel.com, sits on the boards of the One Laptop Per Child* association and ATIS*, and is actively involved in the IEEE* and IETF*, as well as other standards bodies. He has co-authored a number of IEEE standards and related documents. In 1998, Roese published "Switched LANs: Implementation, Operation, Maintenance" (McGraw Hill). He is the named inventor on 16 granted and pending patents in areas of policy-based networking, location-based networking, routing, switching and network management.

In 2008, John received a number of industry accolades, including recognition as Ottawa's Next-Generation Executive of the Year (from OCRI, a key economic development agency in Ottawa Canada, which is home to Nortel's largest concentration of employees and one-third of the company's R&D employees) and recognition as one of the "Top 40 Under 40" in Ottawa from The Ottawa Business Journal. Roese has been based in Ottawa since joining Nortel in 2006.

Roese holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) from the University of New Hampshire. He is based at Nortel's R&D headquarters in Ottawa, Canada.
