Robert Y.L. Mao


Robert Y.L. Mao Robert Mao has been President and Chief Executive Officer of Greater China since September 1997. Based in Beijing, Mr. Mao manages Nortel's operations in the People's Republic of China (PRC), Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) and Taiwan. He is also an Executive Officer of the Nortel Networks Corporation.

Mr. Mao has been associated with the telecommunication and IT industry for over 30 years in Asia, U.S. and Europe. Before joining Nortel, he was Area President for Greater China region at Alcatel, also President and CEO of Alcatel Taisel, a fully-fledged industrial unit in Taiwan, which designs, manufactures and sells telecommunication network products.

Prior to Alcatel, Mr. Mao held a number of senior managerial and technical positions with ITT Corporation and Norton Company of the United States.

Mr. Mao is a graduate of Cornell University in the US, where he obtained a Bachelor and Masters degree in Material Science and Metallurgical Engineering. He also holds a Masters degree in management from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

An active member of the international business community, Mr. Mao is a board member of the Washington D C - based US-China Business Council. He sits on the board of directors of the Taiwan-listed Winbond Electronics and Ambit Electronics corporations.

He is married with three children.
