Environmental Performance
Nortel collects environmental performance data on an annual basis from various locations. The environmental performance data collected is based upon our 'Globally Significant Environmental Aspects'. The environmental performance data for each year is not directly comparable to previous years due to a different mix of locations reporting year on year. Nortel is becoming more of an office and R&D based company, having outsourced a number of manufacturing locations to suppliers and decommissioned a number of locations, therefore we do not recommend using the past environmental data to create any trends.
These 'Globally Significant Environmental Aspects' set the minimum required elements for environmental reporting, and these elements have to be considered in the development of each location's environmental targets and objectives. The locations then manage their performance improvement program based on both the Globally Significant Environmental Aspects and their own site-specific environmental impacts.
Nortel Globally Significant Environmental Aspects are as follows:
- Energy Consumption
- Water Consumption
- Waste Management (Air, Land, Water)
- Emissions to Atmosphere
- Solid Waste/Hazardous Waste
- Waste Water Discharges
The environmental performance statements outlined below include all locations that report and track any or all of the Globally Significant Environmental Aspects. The Globally Significant Environmental Aspects are provided in absolute numbers as well as being normalized to number of employees. We have changed the normalization factor from cost-of-sales to number of employees to reflect more of the type of company Nortel is today, a knowledge-based company with the majority of product manufacturing being provided by suppliers.
