Electromagnetic Radiation

Questionable Effects of Electromagnetic Radiation

Users of portable wireless devices are in close proximity to antennas emitting Electromagnetic Radiation (EMR). For more than 30 years, the issue of whether exposure to low levels of EMR poses a health or safety risk has been actively debated. This discussion has failed to produce conclusive or reliable evidence that exposure to EMR is harmful. However, the effects of EMR energy absorption in the human body are complex and further investigation is currently underway.

Nortel has a Position Statement (PDF, 16.5 KB) on Electromagnetic Radiation from Wireless and Mircrowave Systems.

More Research

Nortel is proactively participating in industry efforts to evaluate whether there is any EMR risk associated with wireless technology. Internally, Nortel has an EMR Advisory Committee, which is corporate-wide and cross-functional. In addition to keeping up with emerging developments in the field, the committee also:

The Future Holds the Key

Nortel will continue to support research on the health effects of EMR, and when appropriate we will modify our products and services to ensure customer, employee and community safety.
