ASIC Tray Return
Nortel Supply Management has developed and implemented a cost-effective return and reuse system to recapture Nortel Networks significant financial investment in ASIC trays. The extremely favorable financial and environmental benefits achieved from this program have paved the road to its success.
ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) trays are used extensively throughout the corporation in the transport of ASIC components between Nortel Networks divisions and to external Nortel Networks customers.
While Semiconductor ASIC trays are the initial focus for this material return initiative, they are just the beginning. Using a similar system and structure, several more initiatives are being developed with other Nortel Networks business units and external suppliers.
Improving Operations
The new Santa Clara campus will consolidate 15 buildings that are spread throughout several sites - into a five-building campus. The consolidation will not only save the company aproximately $12 million annually in reduced rents and create more efficient operations, it will also reduce the environmental impact on the community by avoiding transportation requirements between sites.
Santa Clara Mayor Judy Nadler spoke at the Groundbreaking Ceremony, praising Nortel Networks for maintaining a strong stance on environmental concerns while continuing to create business and 2,400 additional jobs at the site.
"The City of Santa Clara has been very impressed with Nortel Networks voluntary implementation of a comprehensive Transportation Demand Management (TDM) program that has reduced single occupancy vehicle trips between campus sites each day. Building a new site in the vicinity of Nortel Networks current operations will increase the effectiveness of TDM opportunities."
Ms. Nadler also applauded Nortel Networks investment in the community, citing the Santa Clara and Silicon Valley 'Adopt a School' and 'Adopt a Creek' programs as well as the thousands of local volunteer hours logged by Nortel Networks employees.
