1.0 Objective

Environment, health and safety management forms part of Nortel overall corporate governance. Nortel organizational values and guiding principles in this regard are outlined in this Policy.

2.0 Policy

Nortel is committed to contributing to protection of the natural environment for the benefit of future generations and will provide a safe, healthy workplace for all.

Nortel is committed to continual improvement of environment, health and safety management and performance wherever it conducts business. In support of this commitment, each Nortel employee is responsible for taking reasonable care to protect and preserve the environment and to enhance the safety, health and well-being of themselves and of those around them.

To enhance stakeholder value, Nortel will liaise with customers, suppliers, relevant industry and educational bodies to improve business-related environmental, health and safety performance.

In addition to ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, this Policy and related Corporate Procedures and Standards support the business through risk reduction, cost reduction, improved efficiency, product stewardship and help to fulfill the corporation's responsibilities to its shareholders.

3.0 Implementation

This Policy shall be implemented through the application of Corporate Procedure 803.15 - Environment, Health and Safety Management and sets forth requirements intended to integrate the global and local environment, health and safety aspects of Nortel's business, to ensure appropriate due diligence with respect to performance of those requirements and for continual improvement. The requirements provide the framework for:

  • ensuring compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, permits, Nortel Policies, Corporate Procedures and Standards (including Nortel's Guide to Ethical Business Practices), and other requirements to which the corporation subscribes in all areas of environment, health and safety performance;
  • setting of objectives and targets appropriate for continual improvement of environment, health and safety performance;
  • auditing and self-assessment to monitor performance, identify non-conformances, ensure corrective actions and review progress in environment, health and safety performance; and
  • implementation, documentation, maintenance and communication of this Policy to all employees.

All Nortel operations are responsible for meeting the requirements of this Policy and the corporation's environment, health and safety Corporate Procedures and Standards.

All employees and contractors are required to follow this Policy and to report, without delay, any environment, health or safety concerns to Nortel management.
