Recognition: Highlights of Corporate Citizenship programs

At Nortel, we appreciate the recognition we receive from third parties. Outlined below are the awards and recognition received for our Corporate Citizenship activities.

2008

  • Power in PartnershipNortel Northern Ireland was the recipient of the Power in Partnership Award from Business in the Community*; presented to the Northern Ireland Digital Inclusion Steering Group, which is chaired by Nortel. The Power in Partnership Award is for groups of two or more companies that through collaborative action are having a positive impact on communities. The Power in Partnership Award is designed to recognise business collaborations that are pooling efforts and sharing resources to address the challenges facing society. The local Nortel team has developed a community support strategy based on supplying volunteers with the materials they need to assist in the education of young people. A particular focus is the education of ICT (Information, Communication & Technology) skills using tools from Nortel LearnIt. Much of the volunteering work is done in partnership with Young Enterprise* Northern Ireland. Nortel Northern Ireland was also short-listed for the Community Impact Award and highly recommended for the Development of Employees through Volunteering Award.
  • JSINortel named a constituent to the Jantzi Social Index*, one of 60 companies that pass a set of broadly-based environmental, social and governance criteria.

2007

  • Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes Nortel named to the Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index (DJSI) for 2007/8 (3rd consecutive year). The Dow Jones Sustainability Index* is an investment index that benchmarks North America's corporate leaders in sustainable development. The annual review is based on a thorough analysis of corporate economic, environmental and social performance, assessing issues such as corporate governance, risk management, branding, climate change, supply chain standards and labor practices.
  • Dow Jones Sustainability IndexesNortel named a winner of the Alfred P. Sloan Award for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility, distinguishing the company as one of the top practitioners of workplace flexibility at Richardson, Texas. The award distinguishes the company as one of the top practitioners of workplace flexibility in the United States.
  • Business in the Community Nortel awarded The Silver Jubilee Big Tick Award by the Business in the Community*, for programmes that have delivered a long-term positive impact on communities in Northern Ireland. The award was presented to Nortel for the 11-year partnership it has maintained with Young Enterprise.
  • Global e-Sustainability InitiativeNortel joins the Global e-Sustainability Initiative* (GeSI), which aims to further sustainable development in the ICT sector. GeSI fosters global and open cooperation, informs the public of its members’ voluntary actions to improve their sustainability performance, and promotes technologies that foster sustainable development.
  • The Times Top 50 2007Nortel named to The Times Top 50 Where Women Want to Work* in the United Kingdom for outstanding programs in place in the following categories: Diversity, Progressiveness, Responsibility, Opportunity and Connectivity.
  • Nortel named as one of Canada's top ten Socially Responsible companies in the Technology and Media sector by Maclean's Magazine*.
  • Nortel recognized in Spain for its diversity and tolerance. Actualidad Económica, one of the most important business magazines in Spain, has ranked Nortel in 22nd position in its well-known “Best Corporations to Work in Spain” 2007 study which has analyzed human resources policies from the top 132 corporations in Spain.
  • Nortel was recognized in Canada for ‘Leadership in Transportation Demand Management in Canada’ by the Association for Commuter Transportation of Canada (ACT Canada) for it’s proactive GreenCommute and Integrated Work Environment (IWE) programs.



2006
  • Business in the Community Nortel included in the Business in the Community* PerCent Standard Club. The PerCent Standard Club recognizes companies that contribute at least 1% of profits back into the community.
  • Nortel named to the Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index (DJSI) for 2006/7 (2nd consecutive year). The Dow Jones Sustainability Index* is an investment index that benchmarks North America's corporate leaders in sustainable development. The DJSI evaluates the economic, environmental and social performance of North American companies on the basis of 19 rigorous criteria, including corporate governance, supply chain standards, human capital development, customer relationship management, community investment and eco-efficiency.
  • Nortel awarded first place in the 'top private sector employer' in the Ottawa Commuter Challenge* (8th consecutive year) in the 5000+ population category for using sustainable and active modes of transportation during Environment Week; modes of transportation include: walking, jogging, cycling, in-line skating, taking the bus, carpooling or teleworking.
  • Nortel GreenCommute program in Ottawa received a Clean Air Day Award for "Outstanding Contribution to Clean Air" at the 2006 Smog Summit* held in Toronto. The two-day Summit brings together federal, provincial and municipal government leaders to discuss new initiatives focused on improving air quality. The Clear Air Day Awards recognizes individuals, governments, and private sectors for their roles in improving air quality.
  • Nortel awarded the City of Ottawa TravelWise Leadership Award. Nortel was the only private sector company recognized, joining Transport Canada and the University of Ottawa as recipients for this inaugural and prestigious local award. The award recognizes Nortel for the innovative GreenCommute program.

2005

  • Nortel in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina receives Environmental Innovation Award from Environment@RTP* for the company's support of teleworking and alternative commuting options for its employees, as well as for its Investment Recovery Center program for equipment disposal.

2004

  • Best Workplaces for Commuters Nortel has become a member of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the US Department of Transportation (DOT) program called "Best Workplaces for Commuters" that publicly recognizes employers whose commuter benefits reach a National Standard of Excellence. Nortel GreenCommute programs currently running in the Research Triangle Park, NC and Billerica, MA meet the Best Workplace for Commuters requirements.
  • Nortel awarded the 'top private sector employer' in the Ottawa Commuter Challenge* (6th consecutive year) in the 5000+ population category for using sustainable and active modes of transportation during Environment Week; modes of transportation include: walking, jogging, cycling, in-line skating, taking the bus, carpooling or teleworking.  In addition, the Ottawa Region won as having the most number of participants in the over 1 million population category across Canada in this national event.
  • Nortel awarded the Ottawa's Best Workplace for Commuters in recognition of our leadership, innovation and commitment to the support and encouragement of commuter options. The Ottawa's Best Workplace for Commuters award was created by the Greater Ottawa Chamber of Commerce and the City of Ottawa's EnviroCentre to distinguish workplaces that meet a minimum Standard of Excellence by demonstrating a commitment to increasing commuter benefits that improve traffic, employee wellness, and air quality.

2003

  • BEST IN CLASS Environmental and Social Performance Storebrand SRI Nortel is ranked among the best in class in the Storebrand* 2003 assessment of Communications and Electronics Equipment Suppliers; in terms of social responsibility, Storebrand gave Nortel its "third best overall score on the social index," and in the area of environment, Storebrand states that "Nortel ranks among the top performers in all of Storebrand's environmental indicators, receiving the fourth best total environmental index score.
  • Million Hour Award (at least one million employee hours worked without a lost time injury) presented to three facility complexes: Network Center (6 million employee hours), Raleigh Technical Education Center (1 million employee hours) and Gateway, NC (1 million employee hours) from the North Carolina Department of Labor.*
  • Gold Safety Award (injury/ illness rate substantially below the state industry rate) presented to Gateway (2nd consecutive year award), Raleigh Technical Education Center (2nd consecutive year award), Network Center (7th consecutive year award) and Perimeter Park (6th consecutive year award) facilities by the North Carolina Department of Labor.

  • Nortel is rated as the 'Most Environmentally Responsible Company by industry in Canada for Technology - Hardware' and the fourth 'Most Environmentally Responsible Company in Canada', irrespective of industry, by Corporate Knights*
  • WRAP Award*
    Waste Reduction Awards Program, administered by the California Integrated Waste Management Board for waste reduction at Santa Clara
