Commercial Services for Cable Operators

Nortel delivers optical service-enabling solutions to the cable market that facilitate a set of differentiated service offerings to both commercial cable and business customers.

Nortel's Optical Ethernet portfolio enables cable operators to leverage their fiber assets to simply and cost-effectively deliver highly granular, fully managed Ethernet services with service level agreements, including high-speed Internet access, LAN extension, voice, video, and storage services over flexible and native data customer interfaces supporting three main architectural options:

  • Bandwidth efficient Ethernet over SONET/SDH connectivity to the vast installed base of networks with the Optical Metro 3000, Optical Metro 4000, and Optical Multiservice Edge 6500 platforms
  • Cost-efficient Ethernet over fiber using the Nortel Optical Ethernet Switching Solutions (OESS) portfolio which includes the ESU (Ethernet Services Unit) 1800
  • Highly scalable Ethernet over wavelength type of services, with the Optical Metro 5000 family, Optical Multiservice Edge 6500, and the Common Photonic Layer

These combined solutions solve many of the key Ethernet service deployment issues such as resiliency, scalability, and OAM&P, while at the same time addressing the cost structure of building carrier grade high-speed data connectivity solutions spanning metropolitan and wide area networks.

As the need for commercial Gigabit services grows, Nortel's innovative CWDM products allow cable operators to serve institutions and businesses near their fiber nodes without running new fiber. The CWDM Enclosure effectively provides virtual fiber capacity over distinct wavelengths along a single access fiber pair. It can be deployed remotely from the head end, in an outside plant location such as a telephone pole, or a strand mount to help cable operators seize these substantial opportunities for new revenues.

The Common Photonic Layer (CPL) is the key building block in transforming the network towards Adaptive, All Optical Intelligent networking. It leverages years of proven expertise in developing and building Metro, Regional and Long Haul Optical Networks, and offers a completely disruptive approach for simplification of the photonic layer by separating the Service Network Elements (NEs) from the Optical Line. CPL supports enhanced ROADM (eROADM) capabilities, allowing unrestricted add/drop and redirection of any wavelength at any port, enabling on-the-fly wavelength insertion/termination and addition of new optical paths (branches) without re-engineering or service interruption.
